Description:

CASSIUS M. CLAY
(1810 - 1903) Union major general who refused to serve because emancipation had not been declared at the beginning of the war. He served as minister to Russia from Lincoln's until Grant's administration. Scarce A.L.S. 1p. 8vo., Washington, Dec. 11, 1876, to C. G. Faulkner, M. C. for Virginia, and marked "Personal" at top. In part: "…My state will present my name to the National Demo. Conv. in 1876 as the nominee for vice-president. For my antecedents I refer you to the Honl. M. G. Durham & Ed. G. Parsons of Kentucky…". Clay would be gravely disappointed in June 1876, when Thomas Hendricks was instead selected to be the running mate of Samuel J. Tilden. Expertly inlaid, very good.
