Description:

248.1. CARVING UP THE CAYUGA INDIAN RESERVATION An excellent collection of more than 25 items, being eighteenth and early nineteenth-century documents consisting of land grants, deeds and original surveys, secondary transfers of ownership, etc., for properties commonly referred to divided parcels "late of the Cayuga Reservation". This archive dates 1790 - 1815, and includes land transactions between some of the wealthiest and most prominent families of the region such as  the Bostwick, Hughes, Miller, Judd and Richardson clans. The divided parcels are conspicuous in so far as they all fall directly into the geographic vicinity known as the Finger Lakes, one of New York State's greatest recreational treasures. It should be noted that several of the witnesses and judicial figures involved in the transactions dividing the Cayuga Indian Reservation were Revolutionary War patriots who served with distinction. Condition varies widely, with some documents exhibiting fold separations, while others are very good to fine. Sold along with an additional grouping of documents pertaining to Seneca County in New York State, ca. 1800-1815, consisting of land transfers, legal writs, and so on, which involve several of the prominent landowners who participated in the dissolution of the late Cayuga Indian Reservation. Worthy of further research. 500 - 600
