Lot 1356
(Cartoon History) A fantastic lot of almost 100 model sheets, drawings, character studies and sketches, with a few illustrated letters concerning the creation of Milton Caniffs first comic strip, 'Dickie Dare'. In 1933 Caniff inaugurated the Dickie Dare strip, a serial adventure featuring a bright young youth with a yen for excitement. strip met only lukewarm acceptance, and in 1934 Caniff remodeled Dickie Dare and its characters into the wildly popular strip "Terry and the Pirates". Dickie Dare was continued by Coulton Waugh who continued the strip for an additional ten years. This fine archive contain at least ten original drawings (unsigned by Caniff apparently used to tutor Waugh in his illustratons for Dickie Dare. The balance of the collection is comprised of character and setting sketches by Waugh, with much illustrated~ correspondence, likely to Caniff seekin his approval on the various sketches. The most important aspect of this collection is in the close resemblance between the characters in Dickie Dare, and those appearing in Terry and the Pirates. In essence, these drawings show the crucial, early development of Caniffs Terry and the Pirates characters. An outstanding collection of comic art history.
