588. ROBERT CARTER (1663-1732) "King" Carter, colonist, founding father and owner of Carter's Grove in Virginia, acquired the moniker "King" from his wealth and autocratic business methods. Rare D.S. "Robert Carter", 1p. 8vo., Prince William Co., Va., June 1, 1731, an order to surveyor John Warner to undertake a survey of 400 acres of land that is "not yet granted" on behalf of one Jacob Holtzclaw. Vertically split but repaired with archival tape on verso, light dampstain thereat with a marginal chip at right, still boldly penned and signed, and still entirely presentable. Sold with an L.S. of his brother JOHN CARTER, 1p. 8vo., [n.p.], Nov. 5, 1733 ordering a payment of 61 pounds "on Account of my Brother Robert carters Estate and this note shall oblige me to acknowledge the Land you bought of him, so soon as the Deeds are drawn..." Lightly dampstained, small split at top, else very good. Two pieces. $600-800
