Description:

(1818-1863) Confederate brigadier general who served with distinction in the Valley, Maryland, and Northern Virginia Campaigns. Served under Confederate president Jefferson Davis in the Mexican American War. Died as a result of wounds sustained at the Battle of Bristoe Station. POSEY RAISES HIS FIRST COMMAND, THE WILKINSON RIFLES Very rare, fine content, war-date A.L.S. ‘Carnot Posey', 1p. 4to., Natchez, May 5, 1861, to W. H. Brown regarding a company he is raising. In part: '...I notice in the list of companies that have tendered their service that my company is not included....I mustered my company on the 21st ulto & telegraphed to the [?] on that day...I will be glad if you will correct the list and inform me where I stand...mustered 25 & Jeff. Davis Guards…I find that my presence is required with my company and feel compelled…to decline mustering any more companies....please spare me regard and write the prospects of my company called into service...' Scattered ink stains else fine condition. Posey officially mustered his first command, the Wilkinson Rifles, on May 12, 1861 – one week after writing this letter. It would become part of the 16th Mississippi, and he was elected as the regiment's colonel in June of that year. The men under his command would follow him into multiple major battles of the eastern theater including the Seven Days, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg until his death in October 1863

Shipments are sent via FedEx and DHL (for most overseas shipments) or FedEx Ground at the auctioneer's option. Due to complications from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, we will ship with USPS Priority Mail only if the buyer submits their request to us in writing and accepts responsibility for delayed shipments. Signature is always required, unless other arrangements are made. Handling and shipping charges will be added to the invoice in one entry. Buyers should be aware that large, framed, fragile or odd shaped items can incur substantial shipping and packing charges. International shipments are invoiced by DIMENSIONAL weight, not the item weight. Please contact us for an estimate before bidding NOTE: Large, heavy or bulky items may not be shipped by the auctioneer - arrangements for shipping of these items via a third-party shipper may be arranged through the auction house. Customers who supply their own courier account number will still be charged a handling fee. Please allow 2-3 weeks for shipments after receipt of payment due to the high volume of packages being shipped.
