CARL SCHURZ AND OTHER CIVIL WAR AUTOGRAPHS
Nice grouping of seven Civil War-related documents, many signed by officers. Lot includes: CARL SCHURZ (1829-1906) German revolutionary turned American statesman and Union Army general, his large, bold signature, "Sincerely yours, C. Schurz", cut from a document; JAMES WILSON (1837-1925), Union general and railroad executive, A.L.S., 4pp., 12mo., [Wilmington], Jan. 9, 1901, to a Mrs. Casey regarding matters of education; several documents pertaining to EDWARD TOWNSEND (1817-1893), Adjutant General of the United States Army from 1869-1880, including: a large, bold signature as Assistant Adjutant General, "E D Townsend" cut from a document, print engraving of Townsend in uniform, from an original engraving by A.H. Ritchie; contemporary printed copy of "Special Orders, No. 216" regarding the court martial sentencing of a private in the 131st New York Vols.; large, bold signature, "P.H. Watson" as Assistant Secretary of War. Also includes a retained copy of a letter with superb content written by Judah P. Benjamin as the Confederate Attorney General, in which Benjamin pens his legal ruling regarding rank given prior to the Confederacy: "The Confederate States do not recognize the official ranks of Officers holding commissions from the States prior to the date of the entry of such Officers into the service of the Confederacy...". A fine collection of uncommon figures and content, worthy of further research.

Shipping

Shipment is sent USPS priority, USPS International Express (for most overseas) or UPS Ground at the auctioneer's option, signature required, unless other arrangements are made. Handling, shipping and insurance charges will be added to the invoice in one entry. Buyer's should be aware that large, framed, fragile or odd shaped items can incur substantial shipping and packing charges. Customer's who supply their own courier account number will still be charged a handling fee.
