Description:

CARL MOON'S FAVORITE WRISTWATCH
CARL EVERTON MOON (1879 - 1948) American photographer who specialized in portraits of American Indians in their natural surroundings. Moon would spend weeks at a time in tribal villages learning about their cultures in order to capture their likenesses when untouched by modern civilization. Moon's work is especially well known for the hand-tinting of his photographs known as "Lytrit work" which lent the images a delicate drawing-like quality and was a technique that was never attempted outside of such establishments as Sarony in New York. He sold many of his photographs to companies for advertising purposes, thereby popularizing his style, and his pieces were shown at the White House at the bequest of Theodore Roosevelt. A handsome relic, a Gruen watch with a fine hand-crafted sterling silver and turquoise band, no doubt created by one of Moon's photographic subjects. The band is a wide cuff bracelet style with bezel-set turquoise stones and an open band to be custom-fit around the wrist. The octagonal Gruen watch has white enamel and silver numbering. It is attached to the band by means of hinged clips. The bracelet is very heavy and solid. Watch is possibly operational at present, band in fine condition with oxidation consistent with age. Worthy of proper restoration. A fine relic that no doubt had great meaning to the photographer. From a 2005 West Coast auction of many items from Moon's estate, accompanied by the auction listing.
