CARL G. JUNG
(1875 - 1961) Swiss psychiatrist in association with Freud, a founder of analytic psychology who developed theories of the collective unconscious and archetypes. Superb content T.L.S. on his imprinted letterhead, 2pp. 4to., Kusnacht-Zurich, Mar. 2, 1930, to the editor of "Toasts" section of the magazine, The Forum. Recounting his life in English, Jung writes, in part: "...I was born on the 26th of July 1875. My father was a clergyman, and my more remote ancestors on either side were learned people...I began my career as an alienist...I continued my psychopathological studies in Paris...I produced quite a number of papers about experimental psychopathology, chiefly about the disturbances of the association process...I instructed the term 'Complex' of now world-wide renown. 1906 I published my work about the Psychology of Dementia praecox, 1912 my 'Psychology of the Unconscious', which put a dramatic end to my close association with Freud, with whom I had become more intimately acquainted through my experimental work, which had yielded results, that corroborated Freud's original idea of the psychogenic origin of nervous diseases. 1913 I withdrew from the University in order to revote myself entirely to researches about the nature of the Unconscious and the problem of human attitudes...my main work on this subject 'Psychological Types'. My researches about the Unconscious had proven to me the existence of an extraordinary analogy between the psychology of the Primitives and the Unconscious of the civilized man...in 1921 I went first to North Africa...Further and more advanced studies and experiences lead [sic]me to the rather amazing discovery that the creative tendencies of our western Unconscious produce symbolism that shows a most extraordinary analogy with the philosophical and religious symbols of the East. The latter discovery brought me into close contact with the work of [the famed German translator]Richard Wilhelm, the director of the China Institute in Frankfurt...Together with Wilhelm I recently published a book: 'The Secret of the Golden Blossom', which consists of the translation of an ancient Chinese taoist text...Most of my books are translated into English...two greater essays are published in a book called 'Two Essays on Analytical Psychology'. My main work hitherto has consisted in the practical treatment of nervous diseases. My scientific work had to be done in my vacations, because it is essentially the work of a pioneer for whom there never exist[sic]special accommodations...". While Jung glosses over his intellectual parting of ways with Sigmund Freud over the latter's emphasis on sexuality as a prime unconscious motivation, the event was indeed seminal, and, in fact, traumatic for the young psychoanalyst, who had enthusiastically assumed the role of Freud's heir apparent. Following their break, Jung lapsed into a six-year nervous breakdown, during which he systematically recorded his dreams which were later published in the Red Book. Painful as it was, however, Jung's divorce from his symbolic father figure led him to systematically develop his most durable theories in analytical psychology, the collective unconscious and the archetypes. Rusted paperclip impression at top left, else in very good condition.
