Description:

CARISLE INDIAN BOARDING SCHOOL PHOTOGRAPHS
Especially rare pair of ca. 1880 tintype photographs from the U.S. Indian Industrial School in Carlisle, Pa., generally known as Carlisle Indian Industrial School, the flagship Indian boarding school from 1879 through 1918 which largely admitted Plains Indians from six to 25 years of age. The stirring photos, each 4 1/4" x 6 1/2", show two groups of students. One image depicts a group of 18 similarly attired young girls, all about eight to ten years old, standing and seated before a backdrop situated in a tent. The second photo shows a group of boys, about six to nine years old, the photo taken at the same location. Both photos show typical wear and soiling for their age. A local find by a collector in eastern Pennsylvania. Carlisle was founded on the principle that Indians were the equals of European-Americans, and that Indian children immersed in mainstream Euro-American culture would learn skills to advance in society. With the Indian population dwindling, many also believed assimilation was the only hope for their survival. Of course, this meant the loss of their language, culture, religion and even their names, doing psychological damage to generations.
