Description:

CAPTURED GERMAN MAP OF OFFENSIVE OPERATIONS AT STALINGRAD
Especially rare and important Wehrmacht map showing German offensive and defensive operations in and around Stalingrad ca. Sep. 27, 1942, the map later captured by Russian forces. The 31" x 35" topographical map is labeled: "Stalingrad M-38" and depicts the region on a 1:100,000 scale. It was printed by the Wehrmacht in Warsaw, an overprint with German names over an existing Russian map. A great deal of detail is revealed on the map, with German forces and front lines shown in blue grease pencil and Russian forces shown in orange. The map is dated at upper-right "27.9.42" which was the same day that the fighting shifted north to the industrial district. Having slowly advanced over ten days against strong Soviet resistance, 51st Army Corps was finally in front of the three giant factories of Stalingrad: The Red October, Barricades and Tractor Factory. It took a few more days for them to prepare for the most savage offensive of all, which was unleashed on 14 October with a concentration of fire never seen before. The advance is clearly depicted on the map, with the blue German lines drawn and re-drawn as the various labeled elements of the 51st Army are shown advancing northward, with two Russian counter-attacks, one repulsed. Other German forces shown include the 6th Army, 4 Panzer Army, XIV Panzer, 16. Panzer, Kampfgruppe Stahel, XXXXIII Panzer, and more. A Russian assault from the south has been erased, having been indicated in error or more likely been swept back. In the north, two Russian probing attacks are shown as well. At the bottom of the map, there is a pencil notation in Russian, untranslated. Some marginal fold tears with no loss, else very good. A fine depiction of "the calm before the storm", the utter destruction of the German armies at Stalingrad a few months later.
