Description:

CAPTURED GERMAN M16 MURAL-PAINTED HELMET
An extraordinary captured M16 German helmet to which its American captor added a wrap-aorund mural painting depicting scenes from the battle front. Entirely hand painted, the sky-blue top exhibits French planes with blue, white and red markings shooting down German aircraft, one of which is on the ground and in flames. On the lower part of the helmet, the veteran artist has painted an explosion around a hole in the helmet made by either a bullet or piece of shrapnel which very possibly killed the wearer. A liner rivet hole is painted in the same manner. Elsewhere, we see buildings and a church, and on the right American artillerymen, an artillery piece in action, and a limber portrayed. The left rear seems to portray a no man's land of barbed wire and other obstacles. At the front, the artist has added an Iron Cross topped by a crown, the years "1914" and "1918", and a red-bordered banner reading: "World War 1914-1918 Verdun Ch. Thierry St. Mihiel" Some chipping and discoloration to a few areas of paint, otherwise quite good and one of the finest painted helmets of the time we have seen.
