Description:

CAPTURED CONFEDERATE CARTRIDGE WITH IDENTIFICATION
A really neat item, a complete Confederate cartridge with ink identification by the Union soldier who recovered it. The 3" paper cartridge with string closing still attached at top was marked by its discoverer: "Rebel Cartridge Port Hudson, Louisiana Captured by W. F. Gates July 7, 1863 Co. G 26 C.V.". The 26th Connecticut was heavily engaged at Port Hudson, losing its colonel and 107 men in the siege. This cartridge was recovered on the day of the Confederate surrender, and the 26th was one of ten regiments sent to accept that surrender. Gates would survive the war, finally going to his reward in 1916.
