CAPTURE OF MANILA AND PHILIPPINE INSURRECTION LETTERS
Lot of two letters from 1st Idaho Infantry soldier. J. T. Swank to his parents. The first is on patriotic "Remember the Maine" letterhead, 2pp. 8vo., Manila, Aug. 23 (1898), ten days after the fall of the city. In part: "…it didn't take us only one hour after Dewey started to fight. Dewey opened fire at 9:30 and at 10:30 we had possession of everything, the Spanish loss was pretty heavy, can't find out just how many was killed, we lost during the weeks fighting about 15 men killed, we hade a tough time during the siege, had to lay in water behind trenches…living on hard track and beans…" The second letter is written on captured fund-raising stationery captured from Philippine revolutionary and future president EMILIO AGUINALDO, 2pp. legal folio, "Mangatarem", Jan. 8 (1899) on numbered "One Peso" Revolutionary Government of the Philippines letterhead, in pencil. In part: "…we left Mabalacat two months ago…there is some fighting on the south line yet, we have been here six weeks doing nothing, the insurgents have broken up into small bands and are scattered all over the country, robbing and killing amigos…my arms have healed up…I haven't handled a gun with my right hand since I was shot…thinking of buying 100 acres of land…this is some of Aggie's stationery…". Also included is a postcard photo of Swank, 1911 and a calling card used by him while a member of the regiment. Overall very good.
