IDENTIFIED BLACK SPANISH - AMERICAN WAR OFFICER - CAPTAIN WALTER S. THOMAS A fine cabinet card, 5" x 7", a seated image of Captain and Acting Quartermaster Walter S. Thomas of the 9th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. The medal Thomas is wearing appears to be a Civil War-style corps badge of the fifth or fifteenth corps, and considering his age and rank, it is not unlikely that the captain had prior military service in the Civil War. The 9th Ohio, which was composed of only four companies, was the only black unit from Ohio to serve during the Spanish-American War. Mount scuffed, else very good.
