Description:

CAMPAIGN OF 1777 Fine content A.L.S. of Jonathan Tyson, 1p. legal folio, "Continental Village", July 25, 1777 to quartermaster Nicholas Quackenbush at Albany requesting confirmation of a rumor: "...We have heard reports here, that our people have killed & taken a number of the Enemy, if it be true you ill be easy at Albany. Most of our Troops are Marching towards Philadelphia as the Enemy are moving that way...". Alas, the report was a false one: On July 5, Arthur St. Clair evacuated Ticonderoga, and several days later his forces were routed at Hubbardton by Burgoyne. There would be no good news from the northern theatre until John Stark defeated a large Hessian force in August. Tyson reports also that Washington was finally moving his forces south toward Philadelphia as Howe had departed with 15,000 troops aboard a large naval force. Washington moved toward the city even as he was still doubtful that Howe would abandon Burgoyne. Washington's hunch proved correct in the end. With integral address leaf. Usual folds, otherwise very good. $300-500
