Description:

CALVIN COOLIDGE
(1872-1933) Thirtieth President of the United States who succeeded to the presidency upon the death of Harding. Printed D.S., 19pp., 8vo., Boston, January 8, 1920, a signed copy of a speech Coolidge delivered to the Massachusetts Legislature. The lengthy speech touches on several important aspects of Massachusetts government, including the economy, public health, motherhood, education, public security, veterans, agriculture, and law. Though several areas show the roots of the man who insisted as President that, " the business of America is business " and vetoed legislation to aid American farmers, some areas show a distinct contrast: "[on farming]...There is no better opportunity for raising citizens than on the farm. Every encouragement should be extended to the farmer... [on the economy] ...Our Commonwealth was not settled for the paramount purpose of material prosperity. It was recognized to be desirable and desired, but as a means, not an end... prosperity must be sought, but it does not cure discontent...". Boldly signed, " Calvin Coolidge " in black ink on the final page. Age toned with minor foxing, else fine.
