Description:

CALVIN COOLIDGE
(1872-1933) Thirtieth President of the United States who succeeded to the presidency upon the death of Harding. Very early signed book, one of Coolidge's college texts Elements of the Law of Torts for the Use of Students, by Melville M. Bigelow, Boston: Little, Brown & Co., 1894, boldly signed and dated on the front flyleaf "Calvin Coolidge 1895". Spine and covers well-worn, front cover and first three pages, including signed page cleanly detached, else very good. After graduating from Amherst College, at his father's urging Coolidge avoided costly law school and followed the more common practice at the time, apprenticing with Hammond & Field and reading law with them. This text served the 22 year-old future president during that period.
