Description:

CALVIN COOLIDGE
Extraordinary, very early A.L.S. 2pp. 8vo. on his personal letterhead, Northampton, Mass., May 22, 1901 in which the lovestruck 28-year-old City Solicitor writes Smith College student Rose Deering. Deering, a member of a prominent Portland, Maine family, declined Coolidge's proposal of marriage this same year, explaining that Coolidge was "simply too boring". The letter reads in full: "My dear Miss Deering: There is nothing to pardon, you always do all I could wish. No, I am not troubled, it is to keep you from a feeling, perhaps a little akin to that, that I asked to see you - or to try to - and can only try. It is very dear of you to let me come, I shall not forget. I am so tired. Very sincerely, Calvin Coolidge". Very good, with holograph transmittal envelope.
