CALEB GIBBS
(1748-1818) American officer chosen in, chosen in 1776 by Washington to command his personal "life guard", a position he served until1784. In this role, Gibbs not only protected the Commander in Chief, but was also responsible for the selection of defensible quarters for General Washington and his staff. He traveled with Washington as part of his family, participating in every major engagement and, ironically, was injured at Yorktown when hit in the ankle by a bullet shot by Alexander Hamilton. Uncommon A.L.S. 1p. 4to., Boston, Dec. 2, 1795, to Samuel Hodgson, Superintendent of Naval and Military Stores, in part: "...Inclosed you have the Return for the Navy Yard in this place for the month of November 1795...". After the war, Gibbs was appointed a post at the newly-established Navy Yard in Charlestown, where he was deeply involved in the building of such ships as the U.S.S. Constitution. A couple of marginal tears, light foxing, overall very good condition.
