Description:

CADMUS M. WILCOX
(1924-1890) Confederate major general who served with distinction under Joseph E. Johnston and James Longstreet. At the Battle of Gettysburg Wilcox commanded George Pickett's right flank during his fateful charge – it was decimated by the Union artillery atop Cemetery Ridge. Fine content A.L.S., 2pp. 8vo., New Orleans, June 5, 1871 to editor and publisher Henry B. Danson in New York. In part: '...I saw the other day for the first time a number of your Historical Magazine...Have any of your numbers reports of Genl [John] Sedgwick & his subordinates at Salem Church May 3/63, the day Chancellorsville was fought...This church being on the plank road leading from Fredericksburg to Chancellorsville...or have they reports of Handcock [sic] & his subordinates for the fight at Reams Station...[or] Weldon Rail Road...' Of a report published on Gen. Mahone, Wilcox writes: '...it is extraordinarily fulsome , if not to the same extent false. The writer's head is badly organized, & has a tendency to fiction rather than to sober truth...' Expertly inlaid and fine. In the postwar years, many Southern generals railed at reports describing battles as written by northern journalists...and even the generals' contemporaries!
