634. BENJAMIN F. BUTLER (1818-1893) Union major general, called "The Beast" for his authoritarian control of occupied New Orleans. Later in the war, he commanded the Army of the James. A.N.S., 1p. 8vo., [n.p., n.d.], written beneath an invitation extended to him by "....a large number of our citizens...will deliver a lecture on temperance, in the Presbyterian Church in this place on Friday the 29th ult at 3 o'clock - PM..." Butler responds below: "I shall remain but a few days in town, and, would be happy to see the citizens of the place, at my lodgings..." Light uneven toning, otherwise very good. $75-100
