9. DAVID BUSHNELL (1742-1824) American inventor of the first submarine "Bushnell's Turtle" which was also the first such boat to be used in warfare. Scarce A.D.S. "D. Bushnell Capt. & Senior Officer of the Corps of Sappers & Miners", 1p. oblong 4to., West Point, N.Y., Feb. 15, 1783 certifying that Capt. John Bundy was transferred from the 1st Connecticut Regiment to the Corps of Sappers & Miners, and that he was now counted among the quota. Fine condition, matted with images of Bushnell and his "Turtle" in action, all set into a gilt frame. $600-800
