Description:

(1892 - 1977) U.S. Army officer who served from 1917 through 1952. He was an armor officer for most of his career and his most noted assignment was as the Commandant of the Nuremberg Prison which housed the accused during the Nuremberg Trials after World War II. Andrus did not witness the executions himself, as he felt that he had spent too much time with the prisoners to watch them die. Fine content A.L.S. on his personal letterhead, 1p. 4to., [n.p.], Mar. 7, 1974 to recognized militaria dealer Ben Swearingen. In part: "...As to [Rudolf] Hess:- I consider it an international disgrace that he is still in confinement...His confinement is now solitary, a condition never imposed by his sentence...He could not be a danger to society...if released...Other prisoners convicted and sentenced with him to life imprisonment have long ago been released for either illness or old age...All those who had to do with the trial expressed the feeling that he should be released...Thousands of people have joined in seeking his release. If you can help, please do so..." Fine. Of course, Hess would die in solitary confinement under mysterious circumstances in 1987.
