AARON BURR (1756-1836) Vice President under Jefferson with whom he had been tied in the Presidential election of 1800, defeated throught the efforts of Alexander Hamilton who he later killed in a duel. A.L.S. 2pp. 4to., New York, July 10, 1812 to Edward Livingston at New Orleans concerning "...an action ag[ains]t Jacob Barker of this city by whom Taber was recommended to La Nusse in terms which he has been led to suppose lender Barker liable of the debt. Mr. Barker has lately stopped payment, yet...he is desirous of compromising with La Nusse, if to be done immediately and for a small consideration-The amount of La Nusse's claim against Taber is about 10,000 dl... I am authorized by Mr. Barker to offer 500 dollar and all taxable cost for an absolute release, leaving the claim of La Nusse against Taber unimpaired..." Burr, who was reestablishing himself in New York following his life as a fugitive following his shooting of Hamilton, adds "On Monday last I opened my office at No. 9 Nassau St. and announced it in the Gazette and getting rapidly into business..."
