BURMESE INDEPENDENCE An interesting and quite copious lot relating to Burmese [Myanmar] independence and the turmoil of Burmese politics, with most documents dated from 1950-1970.The lot's central figure is MAUNG MAUNG-JI (1900-1971), a Burmese national who led an incredibly colorful life, not only working in a diplomatic capacity with Mohandas Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, and U Thant when he served as UN General Secretary and others, but also devoting much time to studies of Buddhism and the occult. The lot has many fine examples of A.L.S.'s, A.N.S.'s,, D.S.'s, and photographs of diplomatic figures from the period. One highlight includes a seven-piece lot of letters and documents from U THANT, as Burma's Minister of Information, Rangoon, 1952. Another interesting set is seven letters from Sir RICHARD ATTENBOROUGH, on Indo-British Films Limited company letterhead, 1p., 4to, London, circa 1965-1980, pertaining to Maung-Ji's assistance with Attenborough's Academy Award-winning 1982 epic "Gandhi. With further letters from British journalist RICHARD DIMBLEY, former Prime Minister CLEMENT ATTLEE and two original broadsides from KING THEEBAW dated Nov. 7, 1885, declaring war against the English presence in Burma. Worthy of further research.
