Description:

Printed orders on a newspaper clipping, approx. 3 x 6 in., Philadelphia, Dec. 7, 1838, signed in type by ROBERT PATTERSON (1792 - 1881), future Union major general during the Civil War, relating to the 'Buckshot War' - an outbreak of rioting when both the Whig and Democratic parties claimed control over the Pennsylvania House of Representatives after the 1838 legislative elections. As Commander of the Pennsylvania State militia, Patterson's order reads in part: 'The Governor of the Commonwealth...having issued his order requiring me...to immediately march to the seat of Government, a force sufficient to quell an insurrection...who invaded the Senate chamber...by lawless violence and threats of personal injury to the members...the volunteers of the first division will assemble...with thirteen rounds of buckshot cartridge...'. The Governor's refusal to provide proper ammunition - insisting that the militia should use buckshot cartridges instead -inspired the name of the incident. The clipping itself has two strips of thick paper adhered to the top and bottom edges of the verso, likely an archival measure to provide additional support. Lightly toned, some loss at the top edge, else very good.
