Description:

BUCHENWALD CAMP PRISONER'S JACKET, IDENTIFIED
An especially rare, genuine Buchenwald KZ-lager prisoner's jacket, once the property of Lothar Reigmann, born Mar. 27, 1917, Buchenwald inmate No. 46772 and coded 'BV' or 'Berufsverbrecher', or 'Professional Criminal'. On Apr. 6, 1944 Reigmann arrived at Buchenwald and remained a prisoner there until Mar. 12, 1945 at which point it appears he either expired or was released. Offered here is Reigmann's heavy wool blue and white striped prisoner's jacket, meant for winter use, with his prisoner number attached thereto. This is only the second or third piece of camp prisoner's clothing we have felt confident in offering in over 35 years. The construction of, and wear to the jacket is completely consistent with that seen in authentic examples. The jacket has five black Bakelite buttons fitted to the front, the same as used on Luftwaffe flight jackets and which have also turned up on other Buchenwald jackets. The collar has been sloppily zig-zag stitched to the body of the jacket, and the inside of the collar shows wear and soiling increasing from the center of the back of the neck, outwards, entirely consistent with honest use. The collar also bears a hook and eye closure. Examination under magnification shows wear to the surfaces of both, scraping off the original black paint and wearing down the metal to some degree from repeated fastening and unfastening. The bottom hem of the garment as well as the sleeve ends also show wear from use, consistent with rubbing against pants, the front and back of hands, and other surfaces. There is a hole in right armpit, and some scattered light brown spotting, with a spot of white paint at the bottom of the jacket. The left breast of the jacket bears a 3 x 1 1/8 in. white tag bearing Reigmann's prisoner number '46772' and 'Buchenwald' in blue ink and in a period hand. This tag has been crudely hand-sewn to the garment. Hand-numbered tags were not uncommon, and such an example, once owned by prisoner Ben Peres, is featured at the Kuperferberg Holocaust Center in New York. Within, the unlined jacket shows the same hurried stitching, and a breast pocket has been fashioned from a piece of scrap cloth and sewn to the inside left breast. This tunic has all of the hallmarks of authenticity, extremely difficult to correctly mimic even in these modern times.
