Description:

BRYAN GRIMES
(1828 - 1880) Confederate major general and the last such appointed in Lee''s army, he participated in nearly all of the A.N.V.''s battles, including Gettysburg, and commanded one of the last attacks on the day of surrender at Appomattox. A very rare grouping of two war-date A.E.S.''s on a single document, a Certificate of Disability for Detail issued to Pvt. W. W. Chavers of Co. "G", 6th Alabama, 1p. legal folio, Feb. 3, 1865, "Camp Rodes, Va.", due to a gunshot wound to his leg received on Sep. 14, 1862, presumably at South Mountain. On the verso, Grimes writes on Feb. 10th: "Referred to Chief Surgeon Mitchell. Can this man do duty in QM Department. Bryan Grimes". His second endorsement on Feb. 14th reads: "Recommendation of Med. Board appd. Bryan Grimes". Also endorsed by Col. JAMES NEWELL LIGHTFOOT, Major J. F. CULVER and Capt. H. A. HARALSON of the 6th Alabama, three surgeons and other officers. Very good.
