Description:

BRUCE K. HOLLOWAY
(1912-1999) USAF general, World War II fighter ace, later served as the Vice Chief of Staff for the Air Force and commander in chief of the Strategic Air Command. Good content T.L.S. 'B. K. Holloway' as general on Strategic Air Command letterhead, 2pp. 8vo., Nebraska, November 23, 1968, to Cadet John Larson responding to questions sent to him by an ROTC member in Montana State University and discussing his time in the CBI theater. In part: '...The biggest lessons I observed were perhaps negative ones with respect to what the Japanese should have done that they never did do. Perhaps the most unique part of it was that all action in China depend singularly on an airlift line of communications over the Hump. Obviously, we never did have what we needed and had to make the most of the support we did receive. Occasionally the Japanese would bomb Kunming, the eastern terminus of the Hump run. They would always lose a lot of airplanes and retire to their bases...without any follow up for a considerable period. If they had been willing to accept their losses for several days in a row, they would have run us out of gas and ammunition and all allied operations in Central China would have ceased...They never did seem to understand this and made an onslaught the hard way...There were several for whom I have had great admiration, including my boss at that time, General Chennault. He was perhaps the best tactician I have ever known...' Fine condition.
