Description:

Brownie McGee Signed Songwriting Rights Document, 1959
In this one-page document dated July 6, 1959, the folk-blues singer, songwriter, and guitarist has assigned rights to fifty-three previously recorded songs with his partner, Sonny Terry, "for $1.00 and other considerations" to Folkways Records founder Moe Asch: "to do whatever he wishes such as license, sell or lease in whatever form Moe Asch wishes." Asch, a key figure in bringing folk music into the American mainstream in the late 1950's, was of incalculable value to the career of the duo, as they became exceedingly popular mainstays of the folk and blues concert circuit. Signed in blue ballpoint by Brownie McGee and Moe Asch, the 8.5" x 11" sheet exhibits several folds and marginal wear and tear.
