Description:

JOSEPH E. BROWN (1821-1894) Civil War Governor of Georgia who resisted the Confederate government's call for Georgia resources, and fought Jefferson Davis throughout the war. Partly printed war-date D.S., 1p. oblong 4to., Milledgeville, Ga., Aug. 1, 1862, a commission appointing John T. McCarty as an Ensign in Co. F of the 15th Ga. Vols., boldly signed by Brown vertically in the left margin. Co-signed by HENRY C. WAYNE(1815-1883), Confederate brigadier general who retained his commission for but 26 days, resigning in order to maintain Georgia's militia which Gov. Joseph Brown was intent on keeping under his own control. Fine. Two months later, McCarty was captured at Warrenton, Va. and was exchanged at City Point, Mar. 31, 1863. Fine condition. $200-300
