BROTHER WRITES HIS PRISONER BROTHER Interesting letter written by Erastus Kies to his brother, George Kies, then held Richmond's Libby Prison, with a pencil list on verso which we believe is in the hand of prisoner George. In the letter, 2pp. 4to., Worcester, Apr. 21, 1864, Erastus tells his brother he had not sent him a box because of their family's hopes that he would be on the next boat north: "...The next boat has come and I don't hear anything about your coming on it...I will send it immediately on hearing from you...If that officer promised the Col. he would send you north there should be honor enough in him to fill that promise...". On the verso, it appears that prisoner George Kies has made a pencil list of items he hopes his family will send to him and a fellow prisoner, "Tim McC", including provisions, clothing, utensils, etc. Very good. The unfortunate Kies would remain in prison until the end of the war: in all, he was incarcerated at Libby, Macon, Columbia, and Charleston!
