Description:

BROADSIDE WARNS FRENCH CIVILIANS AGAINST SABOTAGE
Scarce bilingual broadside, 22" x 17 3/4", printed in both German and French, a warning directed to French civilians instructing them not to sabotage German military communications cables. In part: "...All damage and destruction of German military cables is forbidden and will be punished severely, usually with death! Factory worker Henri-Jules Guerin of Paris cut a cable in [the Parisian suburb] Pierrefitte, and was apprehended by local inhabitants and handed over to the German military. The court martial sentenced Guerin to death... In order not to tarnish good relations with the free population, I urge them to hand over all saboteurs to the German military authorities immediately. Only in this way can the civilian population avoid the use of German military compulsory measures against the citizenry (arrest of hostages, etc.)" The announcement is signed in type at the conclusion by "Divisionkommandeur" Generalmajor Karl Kriebel. The bottom left corner bears the printing line: "Imp. Ch. Thomas, 1, r. de Mulhouse, Nogent-s.-Marne (Seine)." The broadside shows folds with slight splitting thereto, with some chips to the edges and a blue pencil inscription to the verso, else very good.
