Description:

BRITISH WOMAN'S ACCOUNT OF BEING HELD AT RAVENSBRUCK
Fine content A.L.S. of Dr. Elizabeth Seymour Sheriden, a British citizen living in France and arrested in Burgundy in 1943. She spent two years at Ravensbruck, most of the time acting as a block leader and assuring for the care of the many mothers under her guidance. She writes a 4pp. 8vo. letter to a British officer, Paris, Mar. 30, 1947, setting forth some recollections of her ordeal. In part: "...too much stress was put upon single acts of atrocity. I was called up as a witness when the Ravensbruck trial was held...senseless hours of Appel [role call] we had to stand every day...the endless waiting before the kitchen's doors for those who had to fetch the food allowed to each block, sometines 4 to 5 hours ankle deep in mud or snow...those, who, judged ill enough...[still] had to wait outside in the yard until 6 or 7 P.M....The longer one has been in such a camp the more difficult it seems to express anything about it...I believe most of us would like to forget and be forgotten...all the sob stuff...about the Germans poor Germans and what they have to go through now. They asked for it, didnt they?...why should those who caused all this be pitied now..." Fine.
