Description:

Excellent lot of six paperback books bearing maps and photographs of important French and German towns and cities, issued by the British Government during World War II and intended for military use. Five of the 6.75 x 8.25 in. books concern France which is divided into six zones with one book covering each zone (southwest France, zone 5, not present). The books, published by the Directorate of Military Survey, War Office, 1944, vary from approx. 150pp. to 300pp. or so. In each one, the left hand page bears an aerial view of the given town or city, and at right appears a street plan, most often taken from a pre-war Guide Michelin. Of particular interest is the book covering Zone 2 which includes maps of the towns along the D-Day landing beaches, as well as St. Lo, Falaise, Caen, and many other locations which would prove crucial in the days and weeks following the invasion. The "Germany Town Plans" book is published by the Geographical Section General Staff and labeled "RESTRICTED". It bears schematic street maps alone, and would have proved invaluable to anyone assaulting any of the towns within. Six books, very good to fine.
