Description:

BRITISH SOUTH ATLANTIC MEDAL
The South Atlantic Medal is a British campaign medal awarded to British military personnel and civilians for service in the Falklands War of 1982 between the United Kingdom and Argentina. The medal is made of cupronickel, 36 mm. in diameter. The obverse bears a crowned image of Queen Elizabeth II with the inscription 'ELIZABETH II DEI GRATIA REGINA FID:DEF' ('Elizabeth II, by the grace of God, Queen and Defender of the Faith'). The reverse has the Falkland Islands' coat of arms, which bears the words 'DESIRE THE RIGHT'. A laurel wreath below and the words: 'SOUTH ATLANTIC MEDAL' above make up the border. Along its rim, the medal is named to an A.B.S. crewmember of the H.M.S. ARGONAUT, a Leander-class frigate that served with the Royal Navy from 1967 to 1993. On 21 May 1982 Argonaut, along with other destroyers and frigates, provided close escort for amphibious vessels during the opposed arrival at San Carlos by British Forces, with Argonaut standing off the 'Fanning Head' headland within Falkland Sound guarding the Northern approaches to the operational area. While this operation was underway, she was attacked by Argentine warplanes throughout the day which Argonaut engaged with anti-aircraft weapons. Two of the air attacks succeeded in damaging Argonaut very substantially, striking a magazine and boiler room.
