Description:

BRITISH NEWS ACCOUNT OF THE "MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY"
"The Gentleman's Magazine" (London: John Nichols) May, 1790, 103pp. 8vo., in a modern binding of green cloth. The periodical contains numerous essays on a wide variety of subjects, most notably a report on the mutiny aboard the HMS Bounty, during which Acting Lieutenant Fletcher Christian wrested command of the ship from its captain, William Bligh, in retaliation for Bligh's alleged mistreatment of the crew. In part: "...At day-break on the 28th, the cabin of Captain Bligh... was forcibly entered by the officer of the watch... who dragged him instantly on the deck, menacing his life if he attempted to speak... Each of the desperadoes was armed with a drawn cutlass, or fixed bayonet; and all their musquets were avowed to be charged. Captain Bligh discovered, when he came upon deck, several of the crew, and most of the officers, pinioned; and while he was thus contemplating their perilous fate, the ship's boat was let over her side; and all who were not on the part of the conspirators... were committed to the boat... and thus abandoned, the mutineers, after giving them a cheer, stood away, as they said, for Otaheite [Tahiti]..." Bligh and 18 other men sailed almost 4,000 miles in the small open boat to the island of Timor, while the mutineers settled variously on Tahiti or on tiny Pitcairn Island, where their descendents live to this day. The publication is excellently preserved, and offers a unique contemporary account of one of the most notorious occurrences in the history of seafaring. Very good.
