BRITISH COMMANDER IS COURT-MARTIALED FOR THE LOSS OF HIS VESSEL
AUGUSTUS L KUPER (1809-85) English admiral. In 1841 he was promoted to aaptain and fought in the 1st Opium War (1839-1842), including the operations which led to the capitulation of Canton, China. Manuscript D.S., as Vice Admiral and Commander in Chief, 6pp. folio, HMS EURYALUS at Yokahama, Feb. 2, 1865, to Commander Charles R. F. Boxer; a court martial document directed to Boxer. In part: "…The following, being the finding of the Court Martial held yesterday for the trial of yourself and the surviving officers and Crew of Her Majesty's late Steam Sloop Racehorse, for the loss of that vessel…having heard the narrative of the said Commander…and examined the remaining Officers and Ship's Company…the Court is of the opinion that Her Majesty's late ship was run upon the shore…and lost…[entering] the Southern entrance of Chefou Harbor, without any allowance having been made for the South Easterly current…The Court is therefore of opinion that the charge…is proved…Boxer to be admonished to be more careful in future…no blame whatever attached to the other Officers…" Also signed by Commander Boxer. The ship was lost on Nov. 4, 1865, shortly after it took part in the bombardment of Shimonoseki, during the late shogunate period (Bakumatsu, 1853-67).
