Highly-detailed, late landing map issued by the British War Ministry depicting the shore fortifications, coastal and inland artillery, blockhouses, etc. as well as important descriptive notes of JUNO Beach as known only days fefore the June 6, 1944 D-Day assault. The 24 1/2" x 21 1/4" map is titled: "DEFENCES BERNIERES-SUR-MER" with additional notations: "Information as at May 44...TOP SECRET until issued...This map will NOT be carried in operational aircraft". There are multiple illustrative notes and measurements printed in red across the entire map, for example: "GAPS IN SEAWALL...TUNNEL ROAD BLOCKED BY CONCRETE WALL...DEPLOYMENT POSSIBLE ACROSS ROUGH PASTURE...EXIT. GRADING AND SURFACING REQUIRED...DUNES...." Many of thee notes make reference to "Exit" in case the invasion failed. The verso of the map bears a key to map symbols. Multiple folds and some soiling, undoubtedly from use. More than 14,000 Canadians stormed the five mile stretch of JUNO, suffered 1,074 casualties, including 369 killed on the beach and in the Calvados countryside on the first day of the invasion.
