Description:

BRITISH ANTI-FASCISM: THE BLUE SHIRTS
SHIRTS A rare collection of material related to the ‘Blue Shirts', a British anti-Fascist movement formed by Commander Oliver Locker-Lampson, MP, under the title of ‘Trustees for Freedom' or the ‘Loyalist League'. Locker-Lampson (1880-1954) was a conservative MP who, in 1931, formed the group ‘Sentinels of Empire' with the objective to stamp out both Bolshevism and Fascism from England by creating a movement with all the trappings of an Oswald Mosley-style union but diametrically opposed to it. In 1934, Locker-Lampson introduced The Ten Minute Rule to ban the wearing of political uniforms, which was outrightly aimed at Mosley and the BUF. Although admired by Alfred Rosenberg for what Rosenberg perceived to be a joint disavowal of Bolshevism and Communism, the two departed ideological ways when it came to anti-Semitism, and Locker-Lampson's activities would lead to his prosecution of virulent anti-Semitic Arnold Leese, founder of the Imperial Fascist League. Locker-Lampson also famously offered Albert Einstein refuge after Einstein received death threats in Belgium in 1933; and later worked to help high profile victims of Fascism such as Ethiopian leader Hailie Selassie and psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud. The archive contains rarely-seen Blue Shirt enamel cufflinks in the original packaging; a sheet of letterhead of the ‘Hands Off Britain Defence Campaign'; anti-Nazi propaganda broadsides titled ‘Cross or Swastika", and ‘Race Purification', which depicts blood oozing out from a door with a swastika; a ‘Heil Hitler' broadside with swastika made of bones; two pieces of music for the rallying song of the Loyalist League, ‘March On'; an advertisement for a ‘Clear Out the Reds' event at the Royal Albert Hall; and a book of anti-Hitler cartoons, with amazing graphics. Broadsides bear folds and wear, but most items are in very god condition. Together, nine pieces.
