Description:

HENRY J. MULLER (b. 1917) American Brigadier General, most remember for his planning of the Los Banos Raid in the Philippines. The surprise three-prong land, amphibious, and airborne attack on the camp was launched on February 23, 1945, and liberated 2,147 American and Allied civilians with almost no casualties. During the Cuban Missile Crisis, then Col. Muller commanded the 503rd Parachute Infantry Regiment in the 82nd Airborne Division. His regiment was designated to be first to jump into Cuba shortly before the operation was canceled when Soviet freighters carrying missiles to Cuba turned back. He later served as assistant division commander of the 101st Airborne Division during the Vietnam War. Offered here is Muller's Airborne Brigadier General's tunic, issued Jan. 26, 1955, bears two tags on the lower-left interior lining, bearing the designations 'Coat, Man's, Wind Resistant, Sateen, Water Repellant Treated, Olive Green, Shade No. 107, Slide Fastener Closure' and 'Coat, Man's, Field, Olive Green 107, M-1951.' Sewn on each shoulder epaulette are subdued cloth brigadier general's star insignia. Fading in that area shows where he once had his full colonel's insignia sewn. His upper left sleeve bears the subdued cloth insignia of the 4th US Army. Behind that patch is fading evidence of there once being a 101st Airborne Division patch. Sewn on his left breast is a standard subdued cloth 'US Army' tape and his upper right breast bears his subdued cloth name tape. He has a subdued Senior Parachutist patch sewn above the former patch which also shows proper fading and shrinkage on the inside. This patch is on top of a faded spot where another parachutist patch once was. Sewn near the top of his right sleeve are the subdued, combination, 101st Airborne Division, and Airborne tab patches which also show the correct fading and shrinkage on the inside of the coat. Years of wear and washing have caused most internal snaps and high points to leave a whiter color witness mark on the jacket's outside - also correct for original worn pieces. Very good condition otherwise. Muller was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal, Silver Star, Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Air Medal, the Purple Heart, World War II Victory Medal, American Campaign Medal, and the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal. Sold with a lengthy biography, Muller's service records, and other research. From a major private collection on public display.
