Description:

'BRIGADE 2506' BAY OF PIGS ‘SHORT-SNORTER'
A very rare $1.00 piece of Guatemalan currency, 6 x 2 in., signed by over 20 members of 'Brigade 2506', a CIA sponsored group of Cuban exiles who participated in the disastrous Bay of Pigs Invasion to overthrow Fidel Castro on April 17, 1961. The bill is dated 1960 which was when the CIA began to recruit individuals and carry out infantry training for them at a base in the Sierra Madre mountains of Guatemala. About 1,334 brigade members traveled as a seaborne force from Guatemala during the invasion, of whom about 1,297 landed in Cuba, with an additional 177 airborne paratroops. An estimated 114 drowned or were killed in action, and 1,183 were captured, tried, and imprisoned. Eventually, after lengthy negotiations, members of the brigade were released and repatriated. On December 29, 1962, President John F. Kennedy hosted a 'welcome back' ceremony for the veterans at the Orange Bowl in Miami. Slightly worn and creased, else very good.
