Description:

JOHN MARVIN HEWITT (1910-1991) American Army Brigadier General of Engineers, saw active service in the Pacific during World War II, occupation duty in Japan, and later in Korea in the summer and fall of 1952. Also a member of the 1st Cavalry Division. Awarded the Purple Heart, American Service Defense Medal, American Theater Service Medal, Korean Service Medal with one battle star, Occupation Medal with Japan Clasp, World War II Victory Medal. A career officer. Fine lot of four uniform groupings included is: a 1942 pattern dark wool officer's jacket with belt, an 11th Corps patch sewn to the upper left sleeve. An overseas service bar is sewn to the end of his right sleeve, with Engineers and 'U.S.' collar insignia. Within, Hewitt's embroidered initials are sewn above an interior pocket; a 1944 pattern 'Ike' style jacket which once bore 1st Cavalry Division and 11th Corps patches, with a single overseas service bar at the end of the right sleeve, with Engineers and 'U.S.' collar insignia, complete with trousers named to 'Lt. Hewitt' (probably mismatched to the tunic); a 1942 pattern dark wool officer's coat dated August, 1942, the patches removed but apparently once bearing a 1st Cavalry Division patch with blue 'Engineers' stripe, a 'Military District of Washington' patch, and a 2nd or 5th Army patch. Within, the jacket bears a laundry tag with the name 'HEWITT'; a circa 1952 khaki Army issue shirt bearing an 11th Corps patch on the left shoulder and a period 1st Cavalry Division patch on the right shoulder. Interestingly, each of the breast pockets contains a small hand-sewn packet of cloves, which Hewitt (and others) believed would bring luck, fortune, and protection from harm; and two pairs of wool trousers are included, one bearing Hewitt's name within as 'MG Hewitt, suggesting he may have advanced to major general. Finally, included are two matched pairs of Hewitt's silver brigadier general's stars. An extensive grouping, from a major private collection on public display.
