Description:

FRANK F. REED (b. 1894) American Quartermaster and Brigadier General who served in the famous Pancho Villa - Punitive Expedition, later during the St. Mihiel and Meuse-Argonne Offensives in World War I, ending his military career as the Ordinance Officer of the 1st Air Force in January 1941. A well-made commercial uniform owned and worn by Reed, differing in some respects from the 1926 pattern. The tunic is closed at the front with four brass buttons, and the front bears four flap-pockets: two at the chest, and two at the waist. Pinned to each shoulder epaulette is a single, Brigadier General's star, each matching, of the WWI 'ribbed' surface pattern, and hallmarked 'silver'. The upper lapels bear a pair of matching and hallmarked 'US' pins of the snow flake design, and show wonderful age patina. Each lower collar lapel has a Quartermaster Corps., Officer's style pin of the rare (and very desirable) high quality two-piece construction. The left breast bears three ribbon bars, one bearing two 'x' shaped pips. The inside chocolate liner bears two slash pockets, one of which bears an ownership tag with the inked-in name: 'Brigadier General, Frank F. Reed F542', above the date 'May 27th, 1926'. The neck bears a 'By The House of Kuppenheimer' manufacturer's tag; the Kuppenheimer company was a well known supplier of custom tailored military uniforms. The neck hanger loop is detached from one side, ribbon bars have come unstitched at one end, else very good condition. Sold with a pair of period 'pinks' trousers with no tag inside, a khaki, Officer's 'Regulation' tagged shirt, and a rare pre-war style, black tie. Also sold with an Officer's style belt and buckle, and a pre-war Officer's service cap, in the correct green pre-war shade. This cap did not belong to Reed and is not marked as such, yet was certainly extensively used, as the leather visor and lining shows some scuffing and wear. Finally, the grouping is sold with two pages of biographical information. From a major private collection on public display.
