Description:

Fine lot of ten original signed etchings, 8 x 11.25 in., of the various sights of Germany including Bremen from four artists, including ARTHUR RITSCHERS, FRITZ KUCK, MARTIN P. MULLER and WILLY SCHOLZ. Ritschers's pieces include: a waist-up view of the statue of Bremen Roland, patron saint of Bremen; an exterior view of the Bremen Town Hall; a charming view of an old windmill, and a gothic building viewed from beneath a bridge. Muller's pieces include two etchings of medieval style buildings. Scholz's pieces include: a clocktower in what appears to be Rothenberg, a grandiose building in Munich, and an imposing cathedral. The piece by Kuck depicts the large granary building in Bremen. Each etching is in near excellent condition. They are presented in the original portfolio titled ‘Bremen Original etchings', published by Karl Wustenbecker. The portfolio displays some light chipping and toning. This lot originates from the estate of Lt. Col. Bion C. Welker through his granddaughter. BION C. WELKER (1894-1981) was a U.S. Lieutenant Colonel who convinced 350 SS troops to surrender in Paris without a shot. He accompanied British forces into the city of Bremen where he also served as military governor from 1945-1946.
