718. JOHN C. BRECKINRIDGE (1821-1875) Vice President of the United States who was second to Lincoln in the 1860 elections. He then became a Confederate major general who won the battle of New Market. A.L.S. as Representative, 19. 4to., Washington, Mar. 5, 1853 to the Secretary of the Navy introducing Memphis resident James Coleman who seeks a position as Naval Storekeeper and whom Breckinridge claims he has known since his boyhood. He adds: "...I do not desire to intrude in matters out of my own state, and hope that this note will only be regarded as an endorsement..." Expertly inlaid and in fine condition, with custom slipcase. Fine. $200-300
