Description:

(1817 - 1876) Confederate major general who served under Albert Sidney Johnston in Kentucky, and led at Shiloh, Perryville, and Stones River, relieved for his poor performance at Chickamauga and Chattanooga. Historic war-date A.L.S. on 'Head Quarters Armies Confederate States' letterhead, 1p. 4to., Richmond, Aug. 29, 1864, to Lt. Gen. Jubal A. Early (1816-1894), transmitting a report regarding the former command of Robert Ransom and how to improve the quality of the troops. In part: '...I enclose you a copy of his report, before taking any action and request your suggestions. As part of the command was for some time under Maj. Gen. Breckenridge, he may be even better acquainted...with the personnel. I therefore desire you to obtain an expression of his opinion also...It is feared that too radical a change may produce dissatisfaction in those commands raised mostly in the country now held by the enemy and cause many desertions. At the same time, it is felt that some stringent measures are necessary to secure discipline and prevent disaster...' Accompanied by a contemporary carte de viste photograph of Bragg, 4 x 2.5., (published by E & H.T. Anthony Co: New York). Small tears along folds have been repaired on the verso with tape, slight foxing and edgewear. JOHN C. BRECKINRIDGE, the 14th and youngest-ever Vice President serving under James Buchanan, was expelled from the Senate after joining the Confederate Army. Rising to the rank of major general, he fought with distinction at Shiloh, and throughout the Eastern and Western theaters, then was appointed CSA Secretary of War. ROBERT RANSOM JR. (1828-1892) was a Confederate major general who fought at Antietam, Fredericksburg, and in the Shenandoah Valley, and was relieved from command in August 1864 due to illness. After the Battle of Chattanooga in November of 1863, Bragg resigned as commander of the Army of the Tennessee. He was later assigned by Jefferson Davis as his direct advisor, overseeing the conduct of military operations. In this capacity, he often recommended the best-suited successors for commands whengenerals were relieved or killed. Notably, it was almost entirely because of Bragg that John B. Hood was given command of The Army of the Tennessee after Joseph Johnston was found inadequate.
