Description:

BRADLEY T. JOHNSON
(1829 - 1903) Confederate brigadier general who served in Jackson's Valley campaign and during the Seven Days. He also burned Chambersburg, Pa. under orders by Jubal Early. Two A.Ls.S., the first 3pp. 8vo., Richmond, March 25, 1870. Johnson writes on his law firm's letterhead to F. L. Smith of Alexandria, regarding legal cases and fees incurred therein, in part: ‘...J. M. Riddle has a judgment Farmers Bank vs. Chs. H. Price for $200…Price is here & offer to pay $200 cash sale costs…I cannot act in this matter as Counsel as I have explained to Price…'. More similar content. WITH: an A.L.S. 2pp. 8vo., Daggers Springs, Sept. 20, 1896, editor and publisher, Stilson Hutchins. In part: ‘...The papers announce that you have bought the [newspaper] Richmond State which is to be run as a popular Democratic paper. While I have never been able to understand that Congress can make 16 equal to 1 any more than it can make 2+2=5, I am convinced that the election of McKinley will result in untold disaster in the future & would like to have an engagement as editorial matter on the [Richmond] State. I have the vanity to suppose that my name would be a help in Virginia. Apropos of newspapers, Baltimore is the best place for a Democratic paper in the East. It has over 3…within its morning delivery & there is no Democratic paper in Balt or Phila. There is a little 6x4 penny paper there…I think which could be bought cheap…you could make great property of it…with me as the Editor…". Stilson Hutchins (1838-1912) was a prominent editor and publisher who founded The Washington Post in 1877 and was known for bigotry against Black and Asian Americans. Boldly penned and very good.
