Description:

(BOXER REBELLION) RELIC FROM THE BATTLE OF PEKING
Interesting relic from the Battle of Peking during the Boxer Rebellion, a 2 1/2" x 1 1/2" section of red cloth, once part of a British woman's dress, desperately pressed into service to make a sand bag during the Battle of Peking. The section of cloth is tacked to the top of a period letter reading in part: "Piece of a dress made up into a sand bag used to pack the walls of the British Legation building where the Foreign Ministers and their families and hundreds of native Christians where imprisoned during the siege of Peking China in 1900. These bags were made by the women, from their garments, to line the walls of the buildings...Given to A. A. Gray by Dr. Mortimer Frank of Chicago..." Very good, matted and simply framed. On 14–15 August 1900, a multi-national force, led by Britain, relieved the siege of foreign legations in Peking during the Boxer Rebellion. Since June 20th Boxer forces and Imperial Chinese troops had the legations of Austria-Hungary, Belgium, Britain, France, Italy, Germany, Japan, Netherlands, Russia, Spain and the United States within that city.
