Description:

Great pair of 'I Am a Doughboy' illustrated books, 64pp. 8vo., given to new American recruits upon their entrance into boot camp. Well-illustrated, with images of training U.S. soldiers of different assignments, an introductory page where the soldier can include his name and training regimen, and a few closing pages for autographs. The first belonged to a KIA American soldier, 'Corporal John Nanko Jr.', Co. C, 93rd Batallion, who in black ink adds his name and battalion, date of arrival 'Oct. 20, 44', and an indication of his training with rifles and heavy weapons. Solemnly, a relative adds additional notations about his history and death beneath this, adding in part: '...Our Yankee died in action on Feb. 27, 1945 in Germany on his way across the Rhine...didn't have a chance...Services held Feb 25...church packed...'. Sold with an earlier newspaper clipping, stating that John's brother, PFC Michael Nanko, had died in action, listing one 'Joseph Nanko' (likely John himself) as one of the surviving relatives. The second booklet belonged to an unresearched 'J.J. Tomasko', whose name has been inscribed on the front cover, yet is otherwise blank. Each very good to near fine.
